#351 I miss cibo da spiaggia – 2

Pranzo al sacco, literally ‘lunch in the bag’ is a must of any day-at-the-beach in Italy.

Prosciutto e melone, for many people is the real taste of summer

but also anguria

of course a good slice of focaccia,

one or more panini with prosciutto cotto

Pane al pomodoro is a big classic in Tuscany

Pesche noci

and albicocche

good for your abbronzatura as well!

#335 I miss Italian (vintage) soft drinks – 3

Idrolitina

a magic powder that could turn a flat drink into sparkling water

#322 I miss Italian (vintage) soft drinks – 1

Spuma bionda

a soft drinks made with sparkling water, sugar, caramel, and spices created in the 1920s, still common in Italy… especially if you are more than 40 y.o. …

Gassosa, or gazzosa

another super-sweet soft drink, made with sparkling water (acqua gassata, ‘with gas’), sugar, and lemon, very popular in the 1950s and 1960s.

Cedrata

any Italian hummed the jungle at least once…

#320 I miss frutta di Maggio – 2

Ciliegie

una tira l’altra ‘you eat one and you want another one’ especially when you eat them directly from the tree.

Of course you can make marmellata with them

and good crostate

or torte (‘cakes’)

But you can also make an excellent sciroppo (a syrup that you can mix with water to have a soft drink)

or a liquor, maraschino for example is made with marasche, bitter cherries

Also you can make ciliegie sotto spirito, cherries preserved in spirit

#311 I miss Frutta di Maggio – 1

May, the weather is warm, fruit start growing.

When I was a child I couldn’t way the moment to pick up strawberries in my garden

or find fragoline selvatiche, ‘wild strawberries’, even better

These days my favorite gelateria starts to offer gelato made with fresh fruit of the season

Restaurants offer panna cotta with fresh berries or fragole con panna (I mean with real whipped cream)

and Risotto con le fragole

But my persona favorite is fragole con l’aceto balsamico di Modena

#300 I miss mercato – 2

Many towns in Italy have a square called “Piazza delle erbe” (Verona, Padova, Mantova…) or “delle vettovaglie” (erbe ‘herbs/vegetables’ vettovaglie ‘food’), the one in which mercato was held

(Piazza delle erbe, Verona)

(Domenico Gargiulo, Piazza del Mercato a Napoli, 1654)

But mercato is not only an open air grocery store, of course you can find fresh fruit and vegetable there (and cheap cloths, bags, shoes, fake Gucci and D&G…) it is also a cultural gathering, a place in which you can observe humanity and life in all his beauty and spontaneousness.

#293 I miss feste – 10

There’s a good reason if nobody ever worried about cooking too much food for Easter lunch. Because after Pasqua there is Pasquetta or Il lunedì dell’angelo (‘The Monday of the Angel’), and for Pasquetta we have a scampagnata! (See: “I miss scampagnata” https://misshome.wordpress.com/2014/04/02/273-i-miss-scampagnata/ and “I miss gita fuori porta” https://misshome.wordpress.com/2014/01/21/203-i-miss-gita-fuori-porta/ ) And leftovers are great!

But if you don’t have enough leftovers, there are many typical Pasquetta recipes for the traditional pic-nic Frittata di spaghetti

Casatiello

(See “I miss torte salate – 3” https://misshome.wordpress.com/2014/01/08/190-i-miss-torte-salate-3/ ) Tortano

Focaccia al salame e rosmarino

Agnello and carciofi fritti (‘deep fried lamb and hartchoke)

Buona Pasquetta a tutti!
